One hashtag of five characters has been unpacking several violations since almost eight months. The use of it seems to be relative to rather you’re living in the West or the East. Indeed, look how this hashtag has been used in Iran since May 2018. A story of boy students sexually harassed by their teacher has been trending, making of #MeToo a platform males victims revealed their negative experiences over the years.
#MeToo, originally launched for women to speak out against harassment, is now a shield for many boys and men. In my opinion, it was a mistake to gather girls and women under the same struggle. Of course, being abused is unbearable and speaking out to shame the abuser should be more than normal.
Social networks change the given and blur the reality. Not all people cope with their issues with the same mechanism. It was presumptuous to think that #MeToo would have the same effect in the East. It didn’t have the same impact or the same meaning. Actually, #MeToo is just a bond that links people, female and male, under the same fight worth taking. Yet the war is different. Iranians made the right move by pushing the boundaries and calling for justice.
Globally, #MeToo became the new trial. As States fail to bring justice to victims, the use of this hashtag became imperative to judge abusers and pay respect to all the victims. Is this a reaction to careless governments? #MeToo is a dangerous weapon, useful as it makes people speak. But for what? A witch hunt? I’m not defending anyone. I’m just wondering where all this frustration might lead us. Sooner or later justice will appear, and no one would be able to hide behind the screen.
